What is a Samless Steel Pipe?
Seamless steel pipes are manufactured from a solid block of steel or what is also known as a steel billet. The billet is super-heated, extruded and perforated to create a round hollow section.
Seamless pipe, as the name suggests, have no welds and are generally used in high pressure applications in the Oil & Gas industry.
Seamless pipes are substantially more expensive than ERW pipes and can be manufactured in sizes ranging from 3.175mm (⅛ inch) to 914.4mm (36 inches).

Pros and Cons of Seamless Pipes
Advantages of Seamless Pipes
- Seamless pipes have no weld seam which generally makes them able to withstand higher pressures than ERW pipes;
- Seamless pipes can be manufactured with a much heavier (thicker) wall than ERW pipes; and
- They are less likely to be subject to internal erosion failure due to not having a weld seam.
Disadvantages of Seamless Pipes
- A much higher cost per tonne in comparison to ERW steel pipes;
- Consistently less precise in shape than ERW pipes; and
- Due to the manufacturing process, seamless pipes cannot generally be manufactured in lengths longer than 12 metres.
